One of the finest guitarists to emerge after the death of Charlie Christian, Barney Kessel was a reliable bop soloist throughout his career. He played with a big band fronted by Chico Marx (1943), was fortunate enough to appear in the classic jazz short Jammin' the Blues (1944), and then worked with the big bands of Charlie Barnet (1944-1945) and Artie Shaw (1945); he also recorded with Shaw's Gramercy Five. Kessel became a busy studio musician in Los Angeles, but was always in demand for jazz records. From the mid-40s until the early 90s he was one of the most in-demand guitarists in jazz.

Irascible, demanding, bullying, and probably a genius, Charles Mingus cut himself a uniquely iconoclastic path through jazz in the middle of the 20th century, creating a legacy that became universally lauded only after he was no longer around to bug people. As a bassist, he knew few peers, blessed with a powerful tone and pulsating sense of rhythm, capable of elevating the instrument into the front line of a band. But had he been just a string player, few would know his name today. Rather, he was the greatest bass-playing leader/composer jazz has ever known, one who always kept his ears and fingers on the pulse, spirit, spontaneity, and ferocious expressive power of jazz.

Chesney Henry "Chet" Baker Jr. was an American jazz trumpeter and vocalist. Baker earned much attention and critical praise through the 1950s, particularly for albums featuring his vocals (Chet Baker Sings, It Could Happen to You). Jazz historian Dave Gelly described the promise of Baker's early career as "James Dean, Sinatra, and Bix, rolled into one". His well-publicized drug habit also drove his notoriety and fame. Baker was in and out of jail frequently before enjoying a career resurgence in the late 1970s and '80s.

Very cool 70s work from Ray Conniff – two albums that have him taking on a very new groove. "Theme From S.W.A.T." features a whole host of hip TV themes from the time – performed by Conniff's studio ensemble with a strong focus on instrumental solos. The Conniff Singers come in for a bit, but don't dominate entirely as they do on some of Ray's other 70s records. "Send In The Clowns" is a nice mix of modes from Ray Conniff – as the record has him trying on a whole bunch of different styles – TV themes, soulful pop, and moodier mellow numbers – including one that even features some guest piano from Pete Jolly…

Coleman Randolph Hawkins, nicknamed Hawk and sometimes "Bean", was an American jazz tenor saxophonist. One of the first prominent jazz musicians on his instrument, as Joachim E. Berendt explained: "there were some tenor players before him, but the instrument was not an acknowledged jazz horn". While Hawkins is strongly associated with the swing music and big band era, he had a role in the development of bebop in the 1940s.

Show creator David Chase, director Martin Bruestle, and executive producer Brad Grey are credited with this rich, cross-genre, multigenerational collection, but they tellingly thank a few score others. The contributions from usual suspect vets like Frank Sinatra, Dylan, Elvis Costello, Otis Redding, Van Morrison, the Kinks, Keith Richards (and the Stones), the Pretenders, and Ben E. King contain more than their fair share of musical and contextual surprises. But the collection's true appeal lies in its artistically oblique corners, which somehow embrace alt-rock (R&B tinged and straight up, courtesy of Pigeonhed and Cake, respectively), nouveau Aussie country (Kasey Chambers), traditional gospel and swampy blues (the Campbell Brothers with Katie Jackson, R.L. Burnside), Vivaldi (Cecilia Di Bartoli), and contemporary Neopolitan pop (Madreblu, Lorenzo Jovanotti). Even budding star Uncle Junior chimes in, with Dominic "Goldenthroat" Chianese lending a spare, heartfelt rendition of the traditional "Core'ngrato"; hang onto your kneecaps, 'N Sync!

Otto Klemperer was very much a man of the theatre. “Here, opera and drama were truly united”, he said of his time at Berlin’s Kroll Theatre, a progressive and influential force in the heady years of the Weimar Republic. He was also a man with a sharp sense of humour: this performance of Mendelssohn’s incidental music to Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream both glows with enchantment and sparkles with wit.

Junior Wells' penchant for clowning around sometimes conflicts with his craftsmanship, but he's all business on Come on in This House, his most unadulterated blues record since his highly acclaimed Hoodoo Man Blues of more than 30 years vintage…

Hoodoo Man Blues is not only Junior Wells' initial LP appearance, it is damn near the first LP by a Chicago Blues Band. Chess and a few other labels had reissued 45's by Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, Howling Wolf, Jimmy Reed, Elmore James, etc., but virtually no one had tried to capture the Chicago Blues sound free of the limitations of juke-box/airplay promotion.

Norwegian vocalist Inger Marie Gundersen’s second solo album BY MYSELF is a worthy follow- up to her successful debut release MAKE THIS MOMENT. 45-year old Inger Marie waited many years before venturing into a solo career, but more than twenty years as an active vocalist have provided her with ample experience in the music field.

In May 2011, in Lars Nilsson's Nilento Studio outside Gothenburg, Inger Marie Gundersen and her five Scandinavian musicians met with producer Rasmus Solem and created "For You." This time, Ulf Wakenius and Inger Marie join forces once again. This time with a Scandinavian dream team featuring another Swede, Lars Jansson, on piano, and two Danes, bassist Jesper Bodilsen and drummer Morten Lund - as well as the wonderful trumpeting of Norwegian Per Willy Aaserud on several tracks. This album includes a version of the perhaps most successful song ever from a Norwegian pop group, AHA's "Take on Me".
